This data set is documenting the number of prisoners that were cataloged from the years 1908 to 1922. This data includes numbers from prisons across the country; therefore, it is not solely looking at Atlanta, Georgia. The original chart that the data was derived from broke down the prisoners by sex and then further broke the data down by ethnicity. I decided to make a long chart as a way to easily organize the data. If the data had only been men, I may have done a wide chart, but because women were included, I thought it best to do a long chart for simplicity. For clarification, column F, “Number Received,” refers to the number of prisoners that were cataloged into the system that year and not the total number of cataloged prisoners at that time. The source looked at three cataloging techniques: Bertillon, fingerprints, and index cards. This data set only looks at Bertillon, but I added the column “Recording Technique” so that way I can add the others later if I decide that they are necessary.
