I chose Atlanta, Georgia because of a previous class I had taken that went over the history of Georgia. At the end of the class, we reviewed the book White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism by Kevin M. Kruse. I found this book interesting, and I wanted to learn more about Atlanta’s history. Atlanta was home to many important figures and events of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and while Atlanta was seen as fairly progressive for a Southern city, it still held people who were unwilling to share their space with people of color. This has created a diverse and complex city that houses a myriad of people coming from all walks of life. I think that Atlanta provides a good example of a Southern city because of its diversity and rich history. There are generalizations about the South that have painted its inhabitants as bigoted individuals, and I think that looking into Atlanta and similar Southern cities can help to combat these generalizations and show the diversity of the South.
